BBC News reported a story this week about the amazing number of raids on electrical substations – apparently over 1200 of them in the last 4 years! Why are thieves risking their lives in these daring raids? The answer is quite simple – metal theft. It has become such a big problem that there was even a recent Metal Theft Summit that sought to highlight the huge impact this particular crime has on businesses and communities.

The problem is being tackled through new legislation that will make it illegal for scrap metal dealers to accept cash payments, and they will have a duty to record and identify metal sellers. We welcome the new legislation; anything that helps reduce crime and identify perpetrators is always welcome, however we still believe businesses that really want to avoid theft and damage to their properties need to take steps to adequately protect their property.

Legislation may reduce instances of crime, but will it stop the hardened criminals who are prepared to risk their lives in pursuit of a few pounds? And, if they are willing to dice with death in electrical substations, how easy a target are your premises?

Businesses can take important and effective steps to minimise the risk of theft, and the costly damage that usually accompanies it, by installing alarm systems and monitoring equipment. In most cases this will deter potential thieves, and it should also reduce your insurance premiums. Add to this the potential cost of repairs and the disruption to your business and it’s not hard to make an economic case for what is a comparatively small investment.
